Saatzucht Donau is breeding winter wheat with improved baking quality for conventional and for organic farming. We include parental material into our crosses that is specifically adapted to organic farming and we select indirectly for important traits concerning organic production in the very early generations and we select directly on organic fields with the onset of multi-location yield tests. Our strategy of “Breeding for organic agriculture (BFOA)” combines conventional and organic testing, varieties released after Austrian organic VCU test are usually tested five years in organic trials which is about half of the time from cross to release.
